Salt & Light

Courtesy of SlideShare
We as the body of Christ are commanded (not suggested) to be the "salt and light" to the world around us. Scripture says: "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:13-16

The command is pretty straightforward isn't it? But why does it seem like such a hard thing to do? I believe it's because we do not like confrontation! We don't like to cause a fight or an argument. But that shouldn't hinder us from being obedient.
Its tough to run against the current of society and voice your opinions on what you think is true and righteous. But if we don't say or do something, how can we apply the salt to a decaying world? How can we shine the light on the darkness of sin around us? We can't.
The church has a mandate to "have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." (Eph. 5:11) That means we must speak out! Yes, it will cause some to come unglued because even Jesus said: "Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil." (John 3:17-21)  People that are living in sin can't stand when others are calling it out. They would rather live in darkness then to repent and come to the light.
But sometimes people get really angry before they get saved! They get offended by what you are saying before they see the truth themselves. Our job, is to share the truth in love, and unleash it! Trust the Lord that our labor in the Lord is not in vain.
