God's Provision for Counseling: Biblical or Psychological?

Image
These are quotes taken from Ed Buckley's book entitled: Why Christians Can't Trust Psychology. "A necessary presupposition of biblical counseling is that God has indeed provided every essential truth the believer needs for a happy, fulfilling life in Christ Jesus. It is the belief that God has not left us lacking in any sense. The apostle Peter states it emphatically in his second epistle: "   His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness" (2 Peter 1:3). Note the word everything . God has provided absolutely everything man needs for physical and spiritual life. This a primary consideration. If Peter is correct, then God has given us all the information we need to function successfully in this life. Every essential truth, every essential principle, every essential technique for solving human problems has been delivered in God's Word. Peter underlines this fact wh...

Marks of an Effective Church, Part 1

Image
I have decided to lay out some quotes from the study guide: Marks of an Effective Church, Part 1 . There is a lot of practical information that is helpful for the local church. Suggested Reasons for Growth " A church's spiritual life can't be measured by its numbers because it's easy to attract people. It's far more difficult to make disciples." Emphasis on Godly Leaders: Requirement    " A man is not to be a leader in the church because he is the best businessman, has innate leadership ability, or is a super-salesman. He is to be a leader because he is a man of God." Specific Requirements  " It is saying he must be teachable as well as being able to communicate biblical truth to others; The most important thing about church leaders is that they be concerned about the people they are shepherding." An Emphasis on Goals and Objects " A church must have functional goals and objectives or it will have no direction....

God's Glory Revealed!!!

Image
"The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. 2  Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. 3  There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. 4  Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their utterances to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun, 5  Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices as a strong man to run his course. 6  Its rising is from one end of the heavens, And its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat." ( Psalm 19:1-6 ) These pictures reveal the majesty and power of our Creator!! Truly "for since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse ." ( Romans 1:20 ) Surfing a rai...

Marks of a Healthy Church

Image
Follow the agenda set by church growth experts, business strategists, and opinion surveys, and you’re likely to conclude that building a successful church demands shorter services, larger parking lots, better equipped nurseries, more entertainment, and above all, less preaching and teaching from the Bible. But John MacArthur contends that the church is not a business, success is not its goal, leadership qualifications aren’t negotiable, and its health is not measured in size, market share, bank account, programs, or its influence or popularity with the world. So what is the standard for greatness when it comes to your local church? John’s classic study Marks of a Healthy Church identifies the traits that, when true of a church, lead to effectiveness and spiritual growth in the congregation and the community. This study can help you develop your spiritual gifts in a way that builds up fellow believers. Click here to listen, read, or download this series...

Confronting Contemporary Psychology and Man

Image
By Dr. Chuck Hannaford "The age in which we live is governed by the prince of this world who hates Jesus Christ.   His great doctrine is self-realization."   Oswald Chambers, Biblical Psychology Radio, television, and self-help books are replete with "experts" touting superficial answers for the deep and complex problems of the heart.   Answers that require no internal change certainly appeal to our human nature.   Unfortunately, these messages have become the mantra of some popular Christian authors.   The "name it and claim it" self-esteem gospel in many Christian self-help books, direct us to a cheap self-aggrandizing form of Christianity.   This distorted brand of Christianity encourages us to look on the "bright side" of life without telling us there is no "bright side" without Jesus Christ.    Should evangelicals actively confront a contemporary psychology that denies sin?  ...

Psychology and Psychiatry: Rotten to the Core

Image
One of the things I’ve discovered in nearly half a century of living is that if everybody is doing something, it is quite often the opposite of what God is calling His people to do. “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” —Matthew 7:13-14 For some reason, the Church has a habit of jumping on bandwagons. Whatever it is the world does, Christians want to do it too. Whether it’s the philosophies of emergent church, ecumenism, or Eastern religion, we have set aside discernment and scooted over to make room for them to sit comfortably alongside the Bible. If the world can conceive of it, the Church will adopt it. Perhaps nowhere is this more true than in our welcoming embrace of “Christian” psychology. In fact, we’ve done more than simply given it ...
